Legendary Soviet Scout Passes Away in Altai

The Great Patriotic War veteran Alexey Skurlatov, who had become the prototype of the monument Alesha in Bulgaria, died, aged 91, on Monday night in Nalobikha Village.

The Alesha monument is an 11-meter high ferroconcrete sculpture of the Soviet soldier that was set up in Bulgaria in 1957. The prototype of the monument was the private Alexey Ivanovich Skurlatov, a former gunner of the 10th ski battalion of the 922nd shooting regiment.

In 1944 he was repairing a telephone line in Plovdiv, where he made friends with a worker of a telephone exchange station. According to one version, it was that worker who gave Alexey Skurlatov's photo to the sculptor Vasil Rodoslavov and he created the monument sculpture based on Alexey’s picture. Only in 1980 it became known that the “hero” of the monument lives in the Altai Territory.

Alexey Skurlatov was off at the front from September, 1941, reached Bulgaria and came back home in November, 1946. After the war, having returned to his native land, he worked as the foreman of a trunk telephone station, a combine operator, a mechanical technician, a senior engineer, and the supervisor of a motor shop floor. In 1983 he retired, but then for a long time worked as a mechanic at the Ovchinnikovsky maintenance plant.
