Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden has started his new job at a major Russian company, his lawyer said on Friday.
“Edward started work from the 1st of November. Everything is going fine, he’s working,” Anatoly Kucherena told RIA Novosti. The lawyer refused to specify on Snowden's place of employment due to "security reasons".
Last month, the lawyer said Snowden had got a job maintaining one of Russia’s largest websites. Some people think it could be Vkontakte, the most popular social network in Russia, but its representatives refused to give any official comments on that supposition. Kucherena also said that the question about receiving Russian citizenship for Snowden was not of current importnace yet.
Snowden, a former employee of the US National Security Agency, fled the United States after leaking details of top-secret government surveillance programs to the media.
In August 2013, Russia granted him political asylum, despite extradition demands from the US, where the fugitive American faces charges of espionage and theft of government property. Snowden has been living at an undisclosed location in Russia since then.
