The Metro Station Or The Trees?

Hundreds of trees, including dozens of larch trees, were cut on November 12 in Kirovsky Rayon of Saint Petersburg between the streets of Vasya Alekseev and Novostroek behind the Palace of Culture named after I.I.Gaz. “The construction of the metro station “Putilovskaya” is planned here” - the “Living city" movement reported.

The territory was earlier included in the list of green spaces for general use, but a half of the square was excluded from the Law in 2010 , the other half received the status of inner green space to be saved. However, the square was almost completely cut out.

The Head of "Avtovo" municipality Gennady Truskanov turned to the Prosecutor’s office concerning the fact of the square destruction. The permit for cutting was issued by the Municipal Improvement Committee of St. Petersburg supposedly for the construction of a metro ventilation shaft, but the construction permit was not issued. The metro station is undoubtedly a necessary and socially significant object, but the destruction of beautiful larch trees is a real disaster for the inhabitants of the neighboring houses. It is unclear why it was decided to build a metro station in the place of the only green space in the neighborhood unit, while the rest of the free spaces are allocated for commercial buildings construction.
