The city that could become the Arctic capital was chosen online. The visitors of "Arctic-Info" website were invited to vote for one of the six cities, which are often mentioned as the capitals of Arctic.
Yakutsk – the center of largest diamond mining region – became the leader of the poll in first few days, but according to the survey, it received only 2.59% of votes. A bit less – 2.41% of the votes were cast for Anadyr, Russia's outpost in Eastern Arctic. A real struggle for the title of Arctic capital started between Salekhard, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk, which were neck in neck. Arkhangelsk – the homeland of pomors, one of the first Arctic explorers – broke forward first.
Then, literally in one day, Murmansk – the largest city behind the polar circle, the only ice-free Arctic port – got a few hundred votes and topped the list of candidate cities. But in the last two weeks of voting, Salekhard, which broke away from the nearest pursuer by 800 votes, held the lead.
