Archeologists have found silver jewelry, a cross and tableware of the early 19th century in the center of Moscow.
In order to reach the place, where the treasure had been hidden, archeologists had to remove a one-and-a-half-meter thick layer of soil. According to experts, similar finds have not been found in the center of Moscow for several years.
They have unearthed icon frames, a cross, tea and tablespoons, and knife handles. The entire set of twenty five items is in a somewhat corroded and burned condition. All these things had spent nearly two hundred years under the ground. The researchers are yet to find out as to who had buried these objects there. So far they can only conjecture.
“We assume that these things were brought from some fire by firefighters that were living here. It is difficult to sell things with monograms, so they decided to melt them down to silver. However, later they realized it was not silver and buried the treasure to play it safe”, the director of excavations Vladimir Berkovich explains.
Right upon restoration the found artifacts will replenish the exposition of the Moscow History Museum. The Arbat Private House, where the treasure was found, will also undergo restoration.
