The head of "Rosatom" Sergey Kiriyenko evaluated the project of new nuclear power stations construction in South Africa at $ 40-50 billion. It was reported earlier that "Rosatom" can build in South Africa up to eight nuclear power units equipped with VVER reactors with the total capacity up to 9.6 GW.
"One reactor is worth about $ 5 billion. Taking into account different conditions, the cost of eight units can be estimated at $ 40-50 billion", Kiriyenko said. All legal procedures under the agreement on cooperation in nuclear energy made between state-owned corporation and South African state, to be completed by February 15, 2014. Under the state program for development of energy sector, South Africa seeks to increase the country's share of nuclear power from 5 to 25% by 2030.
