An unknown island has been found in the Laptev Sea. It has been named Yaya.

      The discoverers have declined another option, namely Bounty.

      The island was noticed by a crew of the Mi-26 helicopters making a flight near the coast of Yakutia. The pioneers of the island verified the island location with maps and did not find any marks of this mysterious place there.

      The island area makes several hundred square meters. Scientists assume that the island probably appeared half a century ago. It is located in the ridge of New Siberian Archipelago next to Stolbovoy and Bel’kovsky.

      Not far from there a few islands were wiped out at once in the mid 20th century. It happened due to destruction of their ice and soil basis. Geographers think that considering high activity of geological processes in the region it is not only destruction that is possible there, but the reverse process as well.

      Upon discussions it was decided to name the new island Yaya. The historian and geographer Sergey Ryzhy explains the name origin: initially they wanted to name the island Bounty because of the new island shape similar to the island from the Bounty commercial. When the discoverers started arguing about who was the first to notice the island and hence has the right to name it, all repeated: “Ya, ya, ya!” (i.e. Me, me, me!).
