Runway inaugurated after reconstruction at Moscow's Vnukovo airport on December 2.

Runway No 1 was entirely put into operation and, according to management, now the harbor will go up "to a new level": the passenger flow will increase and for carriers it will be much easier to operate. Runway maintenance works began on spring 2011. Construction workers recoated the runway and made it 500 meters longer – it reached 3.5 kilometers. Also it was equipped with modern lighting and signaling equipment, there were built high-speed taxiways and a draining system. The runway at Vnukovo waited repairing for a long time. In 2011, the runway was battered by 80% since for the last time it was reconstructed in1986.  Now Runway No 1 can accept the giant Airbus A380 and Boeing-787 aircrafts. This means Vnukovo became the only Russian airport, wich has the newest runways.

Vnukovo International Airport is one of the largest air transportation hubs in Russia ranking third in terms of passenger numbers among the nation’s leading aerial gateways.

Of the three Moscow airports, Vnukovo is the highest (204 m above sea level). Hence, in case of fog, it has frequently served as an alternative airport. The airfield has two intersecting runways of 3,000 metres and 3,060 metres in length. Each runway is 60 metres wide, with 10 m wide safety shoulders on each side. The joint runway capacity is 60 aircraft movements per hour. The airport has two passenger terminals (Terminal A and Terminal B), one general aviation terminal (for charter and business flights), one cargo terminal, and 60 aircraft stands. The airport can handle a maximum of 3,000 passengers per hour, and 4,000 people are employed there. In 2008, the airport handled almost 8 million passengers, representing a 16.7% increase from 2007. Vnukovo Airport is equipped with a VIP hall, which is used by many political leaders and important people visiting Russia. The Russian President also uses Vnukovo's VIP facility.
