The Federal Tax Service is seeking to change the way property taxes are paid in a move to boost revenue and nurture a new culture where Russians would not be afraid to deal with the agency.
The tax authorities want taxpayers to report their apartments, cars and land themselves, says Kommersant.
If the new procedure is approved, the change would take place in 2015 and,
according to the FTS, prompt taxpayers to produce an honest report on the property holdings they kept quiet before.
If the new measure is successful, it is expected to add more revenue to municipal budgets where the money from property taxes is channeled.
Unlike Western societies, the Russians have little knowledge on reporting rules and regulations.
