It was OK for US Secretary of State to present his counterpart Sergey Lavrov with Idaho potatoes, but the delivery of American-made yogurt to the US Olympic team is now in limbo due to what Washington claims to be red tape.
According to the New York Times, containers with Chobani yogurt were supposed to fly to Sochi to help US athletes balance out their diet. However, the shipments have been suspended because the Russian authorities have not provided permission to import the product.
What the newspaper calls a blockade has triggered public protests from senior American politicians, some of whom have developed a passion for the delicious food, too.
They have called on the Russian ambassador and the US administration to intervene and secure approval from Rosselkhoznadzor, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance.
However, the Russian side says there have not received the ‘necessary paperwork’ and are not going to issue exemptions.
