Naryn-Kala Fortress in Derbent Recognized Monument of Federal Value

Naryn-Kala Fortress in Derbent (Dagestan) and adjacent historical part of the city have been qualified as a cultural heritage site of federal value.

The fortress area and historical town around it comprise monuments of history and culture of various eras and are of considerable historical and natural value, according to experts’ opinion. The new status will make it possible to preserve the fortress itself, as well as the historical and architectural environment of the historical center of Derbent.

In 2003 Naryn-Kala Fortress was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The citadel constructed in the 6th century in Derbent takes the area of 4.5 hectares. Inside the fortifications there is Russia’s oldest Juma Mosque built in the 8th century, a madrasah of the 15th century and ruins of the shah palace.
