Semyon Varlamov has been picked as the goaltender for the first game of the Russian team that takes place Thursday.
Bilyaletdinov favoured Colorado Avalanche’s star over Sergey Bobrovsky, from Columbus Blue Jackets, said spokesperson Mikhail Zakharov.
In his post onTwitter, Zakharov also said that Viktor Tikhonov and Alexander Svitov will not take part in the opener against Slovenia.
Earlier, Russia-IC reported that Semyon Varlamov has got a brand new mask, designed especially for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Made by Pro Airbrush Artist and Custom Mask Painter David Gunnarsson, the mask features the Russian double headed eagle from the chest of the Russian hockey jersey, spreading out the wings.
“When you come closer a new world of detail work opens up. On the top of #Varlamov´s mask you will find the Russian flag among all the details, and so much more of the trademark effects of #DAVEART,” said the artist in a post on his website.
Gunnarsson said it’s an honour for him to paint masks for Semyon Varlamov.
