Americans Commemorate 100th Anniversary Of Dmitry Shostakovitch Birthday

Memorial evening of the prominent Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovitch has been held in New York. It was in New York where the famous anti-fascist Seventh Symphony was heard for the first time in summer 1942.
The world premiere of the Seventh Symphony took place in New York, before it was performed in the blockaded Leningrad. Maestros Kusivitsky, Stakovsky and Toskanini competed for the right to broadcast it over the BBC radio. Toskanini won, as he had the best reputation as an anti-fascist and Mussolinis enemy. After the radio concert in July 1942 the symphony was played dozens times more during that year. The resonance of the symphony was unheard-of. Shostakovitch who never visited the States, became for the Americans a real hero, the embodiment of the unyielding blockaded Leningrad.
It was this symphony that changed the attitude of the Americans towards the USSR during the war. According to Solomon Volkov, the author of the book Shostakovitch and Stalin, the delivery of the Symphony score to New York was like a detective story. It was recorded at a special photo film and brought by plane first to Teheran, then to Cairo and through the Atlantic to New York. Till date this music remains deeply symbolic for American intelligentsia. It was the Seventh Symphony that was performed by Temirkanov Orchestra in the UNO for the anniversary of the Great Victory.
