A metro line to the new terminal in St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport will be put into operation no earlier than in 2022.

“Subway to Pulkovo is not a perspective for the nearest 8 years. Light rail could be a transitional option," the governor of St. Petersburg, Georgy Poltavchenko said. In addition, according to the mayor, if necessary, the number of regular buses plying between Pulkovo and "Moskovskaya" metro station will be increased.

The need to create an alternative bus service between St. Petersburg and the airport has been discussed for years. In addition to the subway line and light rail, the city authorities have also considered the construction of Aeroexpress line. After two years of construction, the new Pulkovo terminal started operarting on 4th of December, 2013. In 2014, after the first terminal will be reconstructed, the airport capacity will allow accepting up to 17 million passengers a year. As of today, Pulkovo can be reached by bus or private transport.
