On Wednesday, February 19, two snowboarding competitions in men's and women's parallel giant slalom took place in the "Roza Khutor" Extreme Park in Sochi, to become very successful for Russian sportsmen.
In the men's competition Vic Wild of Russia won gold, Nevin Galmarini of Switzerland won silver and Zan Kosir of Slovenia won bronze.
Americann Vic Wild, born and raised in White Salmon, Wash, met Russia's snowboarder Alena Zavarzina at the World Cup snowboard-racing circuit five years ago. They eventually got married and Wild gained Russian citizenship and a chance to compete for a country that puts more money than America into this more Europe-centric version of snowboarding.
In the women's competition Switzerland's Patricia Kummer became the Olympic champion, Japan's Tomoka Takeuchi ranked second, and Alena Zavarzina took the third place.
Vic Wild and Alena Zavarzina have also become a most admired and popular couple at the Games, as they gained their medals at the same day, stood together on the Olympic pedestal carrying Russian flag and managed to demonstrate a true family triumph to Russian fans and the whole world.
“For both of us to have success on the same day, it’s truly incredible,” Wild said. “I don’t know how this happened.”
