Adelina Sotnikova wins seventh Gold for Russia in figure skating, but the world media fume with acrid comments.
In an article entitled Adelina Sotnikova’s Upset Victory Is Hard to Figure, The New York Times favours South Korea’s Kim Yu-na. In a separate scoresheets analysis, however, the newspaper has given an unbiased comparison of the performance as seen by the judges.
The Washington Post has been presented a fair account of the figure skating thriller. “Sotnikova’s program was a shade more difficult because it included seven triple jumps while Kim just did six and the South Korean did fewer triple jumps in combinations,” it says.
Cosmopolitan has praised the ‘other Russian’ that won gold, pointing out that they rooted for another young star, Yulia Lipnitskaya.
Now, if you look at Twitter, Russian-language comments are pro-Sotnikova while English-language posts radiate anger.
Seung Min Kim @seungminkim
@SabrinaSiddiqui I actually think it's a tough call bt harder but flawed program and easier but perfect. Why didn't she do a 7th triple? Grr
NBC Olympics @NBCOlympics
Yuna Kim wins Silver. 17 year old Sotnikova wins Gold, and Kostner wins bronze. Do you agree with the results?

Couldn't have said it better!*~ RT @5voicesAKTF - Adelina Sotnikova was excellent but Kim Yuna was perfect.
John Alastair Kerr @Jkerrbear
It should have been 1.Kim 2. Kostner 3. Sotnikova

@Jkerrbear I agree. I think the judges got caught in the hoopla & missed that she just ran around jumping. Yuna & Caro were breathtaking.
Justin Alm @justinalm
Adelina Sotnikova’s performance was not nearly as composed or artistic as Kim Yuna’s. Judges ruin sport.

This. Thought Sotnikova v v good, but Kim Yu-na best figure skater I've ever seen. Disheartening
Sabrina Siddiqui @SabrinaSiddiqui
@seungminkim See my next tweet! I totally think Yuna Kim should have won. This new scoring system just sucks.
