Denis Tikhomirov, the chief coach of the Russian snowboarding team, has been surprised by the stirring performance of US-born Vic Wild who has won two gold medals for Russia.
According to him, he didn’t pay too much attention to the boy at first because of his low ranking, but this is all about perspiration , he added.
Wild won by a tenth of second in men's snowboard parallel slalom at Rosa Khutor’s Extreme Park and earlier he finished first in men’s parallel giant slalom.
Wild got Russian citizenship after marrying Alyona Zavarzina, a snowboarder who won bronze in Sochi. He wasn’t considered a promising star back home, but proved that love can be a great inspiration. You can read about the couple on our Hall of Fame page at Russia-IC.
Russia secures second spot in the total medal count, with 10 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals, matching the results of the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Games.
If Russian athletes win three more medals, Team Russia would set a historic record for the nation’s appearance in Winter Olympic Games.
On Friday, Korean-born Viktor An won gold in men's 500m individual race and later helped the national team outskate Team USA in the 5,000m relay.
There will be a lot of talk on whether Russia can celebrate these medals as its own but history knows many cases when athletes moved to other countries to enjoy success. It’s their wish to get atop the podium and it’s their choice that has to be respected.
