Short track skater Semyon Elistratov said the victory in the men's 5,000m relay was an unbelievable surprise.
According to Sovetsky Sport, Elistratov said he could never have imagined to progress so quickly, from the 24th place at the 2010 Vancouver Games to the top in Sochi.
Much of the credit for the win goes to Korean-born Viktor An, who helped to create a competitive environment in the national team, provoking Russians to a better performance.
Korean-born athlete who has become a six-time Olympic champion said the Sochi Olympics were the best Games in his career.
Once a three-time champion in his home country, he was put on the bench after an injury, a move which is believed to have deeply offended him. He then moved to Russia to prepare for the Sochi Games.
According to An, the gold in the team relay was especially important because this race crowns all the events in the short track.
He was inspired by the first gold he won earlier, he added. His rivals were strong, but that only pushed more adrenaline to his head, he was quoted as saying. An is proud to have raised the level of short track to an Olympic level.
