Ukraine’s football clubs could join Russia’s Premier League to avoid a financial deadlock that is likely to ruin the Ukrainian championship, Sovetsky Sport cites some of the football experts as saying.
According to sports agent Vladimir Abramov, clubs from eastern Ukraine, which is more Russia-oriented, could join the Premier League although this move is likely to be banned by UEFA chief Michel Platini.
The statement was made after the next round of the national championship in Ukraine slated for February 28 was postponed.
A year ago, some of the top Russian clubs lobbied for a united championship involving the best teams from Russia and Ukraine. The initiative was not favoured by Platini but some of the Russian officials continued working on it.
Ukraine is facing a turbulent time at the moment, with president Yanukovich fleeing his office and an interim president re-instated by the parliament following several months of violent protests in the center of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.
