Russian figure skater Evgeny Plushchenko is expected to undergo surgery in an Israeli clinic on March 2 after an injury which forced the ice star suddenly withdraw from the Olympics, says the RIA Novosti news agency.
The two-time Olympic and three-time world champion, Plushchenko pulled out of individual competitions after straining his back during a pre-event heat.
He apologized to the fans and said he could not proceed for fear of a more serious back injury.
Later, as Plushchenko explained, a screw inside his back snapped, an incident which could have left him paralyzed.
At 31, he has had a history of medical problems but fought hard to get back on ice for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He was picked by the federation although the decision arouse criticism from experts.
At the Games, he helped Russia win the team competition but right before the individual event withdrew to leave the host country without a competitor.
With 33 medals, Russia set a new all-time record of the medal haul, beating Soviet achievements.
