The house studio of the architect Konstantin Melnikov in Krivoarbatsky Lane of Moscow has been listed among the cultural heritage sites of federal value.
The experimental residential house and art studio is one of the most vivid works by the architect Konstantin Melnikov, an outstanding monument of the 20th century architecture. Melnikov’s House is one of the most well-known residential buildings of the 1920s in Moscow. It stands out with its innovative design features and a unique artistic shape. The shape of the house reminds two concrete cylinders of different height cut one into another. The architect believed that the absence of square corners made the usable space much bigger than it was possible in standard buildings.
Presently the unique building is in a deplorable state. As representatives of the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow repeatedly declared, “the restoration issue can only be solved after completion of property disputes among the architect’s inheritors”.
