People drink less alcohol in Russia from 2009 to 2013, but alcohol still kills about 75 thousand people a year. Such data were quoted by a member of the State Duma Committee for Health Raziet Natho (“United Russia”) at a round table conference related to the state policy for reducing the abuse of alcoholic beverages.
Referring to the estimates by the experts of the World Health Organization (WHO), Natho noted that “exceeding the permissible limits for drinking alcoholic beverages in the amount of 8 liters of pure alcohol per capita is extremely dangerous to the health of the nation”. Thus, the excessive use of each liter takes 11 months of life for men and 4 months for women, she said. Natho recalled that, according to the Federal Service of State Statistics of the RF, alcohol consumption in Russia fell from 18 liters per capita in 2009 to 13.5 liters in 2013.
“According to the statistics of the Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare of the RF, alcohol kills 75.2 thousand people annually” - she said, adding that “it is a direct loss, when a person dies immediately after drinking alcohol, and not necessarily from low-quality alcohol”.
