The unique city state of Phanagoria was founded about 540 BC. It was located on the coast of the Gulf of Taman, between the present-day settlements of Sennoi and Primorsky of the Temryuk District of the Krasnodar Territory. According to research studies, the city existed for about 15 centuries. Today Phanagoria, one of the oldest towns found in the territory of Russia, is a monument of ancient archeology.
