Aggravation of relations with the West can change the organization of the Russian Internet market. The Government is preparing a package of measures to tighten control over the Internet providers. It is about content filtering at all levels of data networks; impossibility of locating .RU and .ÐÔ DNS-domain servers outside of Russia and the ban on joining regional and local data networks to foreign Internet networks.
The government may gain unlimited opportunities for Internet censorship, but for subscribers this will result in higher prices and lower quality of Internet access. As follows from the elaborated proposals, it is required to introduce three levels of data networks in Russia: local, regional and national. In particular, it is encouraged to pass the traffic of regional and local operators only through nationwide operators' networks.
