Number Of Refugees Goes Up

The number of persons who applied for refugee status and temporary refuge in the Russian Federation grew by almost 20 times this year, Ukraine and Syria are leading, as RIA Novosti reported to the press service of the Federal Migration Service of the RF on Wednesday. 

      According to the Federal Migration Service of the RF, there are more than 600 refugees from different countries in Russia now and about 4 thousand people who have been given temporary refuge. “The number of applications has increased significantly over the past two months - it grew by almost 20 times compared to last year. The majority of them come from Ukraine and Syria” - the agency reported.

      According to the Federal Migration Service of the RF, more than 2.6 thousand people from Ukraine have already asked for refuge in Russia from March to May this year, despite the fact that only 5 applications of this kind were accepted in the whole last year.

      Earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that a humanitarian disaster is going to happen in the blockaded cities because of the operation in eastern Ukraine. The rallies of federalization supporters have been held in eastern Ukraine - Donetsk, Kharkov and Lugansk - since March. The protests later spread to several towns of Donetsk region. Ukrainian authorities started a large-scale security operation involving the armed forces in mid-April.
