The Tretyakov Gallery is going to display the Birth of Masterpiece: Sketch, Etude, and Painting.
The exhibition from the graphic art collection of the 18th – early 20th centuries will introduce the visitors to the stages of creating the glorified canvasses, among them The Last Day of Pompeii by Karl Brullov, The Appearance of Christ before the People by Alexander Ivanov, Barge Haulers on Volga by Ilya Repin, Boyar’s Wife Morozova by Vassily Surikov, Demon Downcast by Mikhail Vrubel, Stealing of Europe by Valentin Serov, and others.
The exposition will include numerous studies: initial sketches, versions of possible compositions, preparatory drawings, including studies of antique sculptures and copies of old masters’ works. The etudes presented there are outstanding paragons of drawing.
The exhibition will run from May 30 to November 9.
