Ancient Pier Found in Sochi Beach

The archeologist Andrey Kizilov has found remains of a trading centre near Matsesta.

The scientist assumes that there was an outlet to the sea of one of the Caucasian caravan tracks there over a thousand years ago.

A large transshipment terminal – this trading centre – was located nearby around the 8th – 10th centuries. The coast covered with fragments of ancient ceramics gives evidence to it.

According to the archeologist, most of the remained constructions were destroyed when laying rail tracks along the coast. Thus finding quite a considerable fragment of the historical construction is of great value to the archeological science.

The staff of the Felitsyn Memorial Estate in Krasnodar is interested in this find. An archaeological expedition is planned to be carried out in summer for detailed study of the coastal and underwater beach sites.
