Germany May Permit Freking To Reduce Energy Dependence On Russia

Germany may lift ban on freking (gas extraction technology based on hydraulic fracturing) in 2015, as The Financial Times writes.

Thus, Berlin will meet the needs of those who claim it necessary to reduce energy dependence on Russia and to increase competition with the U.S. fuel producers, the newspaper notes. Applications for freking will be examined for environmental impact under the new legislation, which will be discussed by the German government before its members leave for summer vacation.

The details of this legislation are given in the letter of the German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel to the Head of the Budget Committee of the Bundestag. The letter states, in particular, that the permits for freking will be issued by regional water authorities. Other requirements for the application process are still being considered, Gabriel said. The technology of hydraulic fracturing will be prohibited in the regions where water quality is under official protection, the newspaper adds.
