The memorial museum on history of political repressions Perm-36 has been devoid of state financial backing.
One of the officially recognized national commemoration sites, it is now on the verge of closing.
The memorial museum Perm-36 was founded on the place of a Soviet corrective labor camp of high security for those condemned for “especially dangerous crime against the State” in Kuchino Settlement in the Chusovoy District of the Perm Territory.
“For more than 20 years thousands of civil activists and volunteers from the Perm Territory, lots of Russian regions and even other countries selflessly worked on creating this unique historical monument” — human rights activists point out.
“Perm-36 Museum has become known all over the world, and its existence itself was the evidence to the fact that new Russia forever abandoned its totalitarian heritage. However, it turned out that an official’s single signature was enough to depreciate the physical and intellectual contribution of hundreds of public figures and enthusiasts and just write the Memorial Museum off” – they raise alarm.
