Unique 13th Century Burial Ground Found by Archeologists

An ancient burial ground of the 13th century has been unearthed in Poritsy Village of the Gatchina District of the Leningrad Region.

The skeletons are surrounded with silver fibulas, bronze knives, and coins, which are probably Swedish. These finds show it was not from scratch that Peter I built St. Petersburg and there were numerous settlements around, the scientists assume.

The unearthed remains make it possible to establish the ethnicity of the dwellers of this area in the Middle Ages. Scientists claim that it was inhabited by the Izhora tribe of the Finno-Ugric people.

The archeologists will hardly get access to the entire burial ground, since the area is populated. So they are investigating only this particular site currently.

The found remains will be sent for examination to the Kunstkamera Museum (Cabinet of Curiosities), whereas the ancient artifacts will most likely be handed over to the Hermitage.
