When it comes to choosing between train or plane, every passenger takes many factors into account: the availability and cost of tickets, travel time, proximity to the airport and even the fear of flying. However, the data showed that Russian people more often prefer planes when moving inside Russia, as the experts of the Institute for Complex Strategic Studies write in their blog. Every year fewer Russians use trains, and more of them use planes.
During two years the number of passengers choosing railway reduced by 2.8 million people, while the same number in air transport increased by 2.5 million people. This is a negative trend, given the low mobility of the Russian population.
Why is this happening? The prices on train tickets will rise faster than those on air tickets. The economy class in trains has risen in price by 80% for the last six years, the economy class in planes grew more expensive only by almost 30%. The main factor speaking for the choice between a train and a passenger plane is travel time, as the poll of the users of the “tutu.ru” website showed (albeit the sample was not very representative). The second line is taken by the cost of the ticket, followed by the fear of flying.
