Yesterday a roof of a market in eastern Moscow collapsed killing 60 people and injuring 36. Today one more person died in hospital while the number of those hospitalized was cut to 23.
The Basmanny market was designed by the same architect who worked on the notorious Transvaal Water Park, whose roof caved in in 2004. The investigation is working on several causes for yesterday's incident. The most probable causes may be heavy snow build-up and faults in the design. Terrorism has been ruled out. The accident happened early in the morning when there were just up to 70 people, mostly non-residents.
Yury Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscow, has pledged financial support for the injured and a set-up of a special technical committee.
He also said the site will be leveled and rebuilt into a beautiful modern mall with small shops and boutiques on ground floor and cafes and restaurants on the first floor.
