The Russian press and pundits have slammed Russia’s reigning champion CSKA for a bitter 5-1 defeat in an away match against Italy’s Roma.
According to the media and blogs, the crushing defeat revealed serious gaps in the defense line and the lack of cool by the goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev, who played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and made two blunders that left Russia out of the Last 16.
CSKA lost four goals in the first half, then scored an own goal but was still able to sweet the pill.
According to the Football Italia, the game was a big occasion for the Giallorossi, who were out of Europe altogether for two years and hadn’t played in the Champions League since reaching the Round of 16 in 2010-11.
“CSKA Moscow lost all three of their away games in the Champions League group phase last season, scoring three goals and conceding 10,” said the website.
Alan Dzagoev and Pontus Wernbloom have been suspended, while Rasmus Elm and Vitinho need some treatment.
