Torino 2006. The last day.

Yesterday was the last day of the XX Olympic Winter Games. The last day let Russia win another medal, silver this time. Russian skier Evgeny Dementyev came second in Mens mass start, yielding only to Italian Giorgio di Centa. In the course of the marathon Evgeny first stayed on the 55th position, then slowly catching up with the leaders he became 12th four kilometers from the finish, and his fast spurt at the finish put him on the second place. Thus the end of the Games sparkled for Russia as a jewel in the light: we won once more!
The Olympic Games are over, its time to review the performance of Russian sportsmen, their achievements and failures. First of all one can note that Russia looked much stronger than during the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and won nine medals more. Russia took overall fourth place this time as opposed to the fifth place four years before.
Actually, Russian team exceeded the expectations of Russian fans and many specialists who predicted much less gold medals. But there were three really embarrassing moments during these Games. First of all, the strange case of Olga Pyleva who has been disqualified by the International Olympic Committee after failing the anti-doping test, the only such case during the Games in Turin.
Second sad moment for Russian people was the bronze of Irina Slutskaya who was capable of winning the gold, but fell in her free program and failed to win.
The last disappointment came when our hockey team after beating our old rival, Canadians, were helpless in the face of Finns, and lost 0:4. This would have been a terrible moment in itself, but Russian team doubled the humiliation by losing to Czechs 0:3. Thus what started like a victorious ascension to the pedestal became a disgrace of Russian hockey team.
On the other hand Russian skiers and biathletes impressed everybody and showed that our skiing team is one of the strongest in the world, along with Russian figure skaters and speed skaters.
We congratulate all Russian sportsmen who participated in the XX Olympic Winter Games! Thank you, you are the best, we love you!
And we hope that next time our team wins even more medals especially gold medals.
