Administration of the Tver Region gathers signatures for restoring a ruining architecture monument.
The officials want to include the flooded St. Nicholas Cathedral Belltower, which stands out of the Volga River surface in the federal target program for restoration of cultural heritage sites for 2016. There is a serious concern that the unique architecture monument might fail in the coming years.
The Belltower of the St. Nicholas Cathedral of Nicolo-Zhabensky Convent was built in 1800. The 74.5 meter tower was the highest structure of the central part of the Kalyazin town then.
In the 1940s some part of Kalyazin turned to be in the flooding zone due to construction of the Uglich hydroelectric power station and opening of the Uglich water reservoir in Volga. The St. Nicholas Cathedral with its belltower was flooded too. The cathedral was demolished and the belltower was left as a local sight. Now it stands on an islet with a boat mooring. The monumental belltower is a famous tourist attraction that makes Kalyazin very popular among travelers.
