School children in several Russian regions will get the opportunity to learn about robotics and its technology during optional courses.
According to Russian Ministry of Education, special robotics programs will enter school curriculum in September 2015 as a part of an obligatory 'Technology' syllabus. Russian pupils will learn about stages of robots creation and will become familiar with several practical skills. Education authorities hope the new course will help to make learning process in school "more interesting".
Russian Minister of Education Livanon also said the new course could help to improve Russia's competitiveness in the world of robotics and to make technology and engineering more inviting for future students. "We know that not every child has to become an engineer or a designer, but everyone should have a chance to try it out,” Livanov said.
Experiments for including robotics to the school curriculum are already taking place in some schools in the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Chelyabinsk, Tatarstan regions. Starting from 2015 the course is expected to be accessible for each school in every region of Russia. School children can choose on their own if they will be attending these classes.
However, some regional education departments have already expressed their concerns about the schools' readiness for the new program. Many schools don't have enough space for opening big new classrooms, not to mention having learning books or special technical equipment. And their budget is usually too low for such expenses.
