It is planned to turn the old Königsberg fort No. 3 “King Frederick III”, the largest fortification construction in Kaliningrad, into a “civilized” tourist site.
The fort No. 3 was built in the second half of XIX century. Since 1894 it has been called “King Frederick III”; it presents an elongated hexagon with the size 360 by 180 meters, surrounded by a dry moat 6 meters long and 10 meters wide. It is considered the largest fortification construction of Königsberg. Since 2007 it has been included into the list of objects of cultural heritage of regional significance. Since 2001 it’s been subject to the gratuitous use of a non-profit organization. Now the fort is neglected. “We must create the conditions for a civilized tourism here, attract reliable investors to implementation of cultural and educational projects at the fort, to ensure quality restoration and safety of the fort for visitors” - the regional governor Nikolai Tsukanov said.
