Leviathan by the Russian film director Andrey Zvyagintsev tops the list of the best world films of 2014, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The top ten also includes Only Lovers Left Alive by Jim Jarmusch, Birdman by Alejandro González I ñárritu, and Ida by Pawech Pawlikowski.
The rating’s author Todd McCarthy points out that the film “describing corruption in Russia” is highly charged thematically, visually and politically. “Our Russian friend argued that the film doesn't include Putin in the list of targets, but there seems to be hidden criticism”. McCarthy added that “the film is a masterpiece even by Russian standards.

Earlier Leviathan was included into top ten movies of 2014 according to the film observer of the Associated Press Jake Coyle American news agency. The winner of the The Best Scenario Prize at the 67th Cannes Film Festival is also nominated for the Oscar and Gold Globe awards.
Leviathan is a cinematic interpretation of the bible character Job’s story in the setting of modern Russia, where the Leviathan monster is the state machine.
The Leviathan goes on general release in Russia in February, 2015.
