CNN to Stop Broadcasting in Russia

CNN to Stop Broadcasting in Russia

American CNN TV company will stop broadcasting in Russia's cable and satellite networks from December 31, the official representatives of Turner Broadcasting System International (TBSI) company told the press.

This situation won't affect the work of CNN's press office in Moscow. The company's journalists will continue to cover the news from Russia for western TV companies.

In November 2014, TBSI sent an official announcement to Russian cable operators, including "Vympelkom" and "Akado", about cessation of CNN broadcasting. According to Vedomosti newspaper, it was possibly because of Russia's Roscomnadzor stalling to give the new broadcasting license to CNN.

Another Vedomosti's source has said that the company took the decision to leave Russia's TV networks because of a new law which was about to come in action soon. That law prohibits chargeable TV channels from showing commercials.

Later TBSI confirmed to the press that the real reason for leaving Russia's network was the new advertisement law. The company finds it inexpedient to cut out the advertisement from the air for one country only. At the same time, TBSI promises that two other channels under their control - Cartoon Network Boomerang - will be broadcasting in Russia without any advertisement.

The law about chargeable TV channels broadcasting with no commercials was adopted in July 2014 and signed by the Russian President the same month. The law is expected to equalize Russian free and chargeable TV channels in their methods of profit earning.
