Christian Schmidt, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture of Germany hopes to change the conditions of products embargo imposed from the Russian part. This was published in the German edition of Wirtschafts Woche.
According to German journalists, Schmidt is going to meet with Agriculture Minister of the Russian Federation Nikolai Fyodorov. The meeting will be held during the exhibition of agricultural products "Green Week" in Berlin on 16 January, 2015. The representative of the German government intends to raise the issue of a potential weakening of the Russian embargo on products from the German agricultural sector.
German minister hopes for a speedy return to the traditionally productive relations between the two agricultural countries, as it is mentioned in the foreign media. However, Wirtschafts Woche notes that, according to Schmidt, lifting the Russian embargo does not automatically mean the easing of sanctions of the West against the Russian Federation.
Russian embargo affected about one percent of total German exports, which brings the country about 67 billion euros per year. Russia imposed a ban on the supply of beef, pork, vegetables, poultry, cheese and milk from the EU, the US, Australia, Canada and Norway on August 7, 2014. Limits are imposed for the period of one year.
