Best Russian Racewalkers Disqualified for Doping Offenses

Several Russian racewalking athletes were disqualified from competing in sports events for a very long term because they had been tested positive for banned drugs, Russian Anti-Doping Agency RUSADA reports.

"The disqualification results from the use of prohibited substances or prohibited methods," the agency said in a statement.

The list of disqualified athletes includes Olympic champions in racewalking Sergey Kirdyapkin and Olga Kaniskina, as well as World Champion in racewalking Sergey Bakulin. They have been disqualified for three years and two months.

Olympic Champion in racewalking Valery Borchin has been disqualified for eight years, while 2011 World silver medalist racewalker Vladimir Kanaykin has been disqualified for life.

The doping scandal has become a big blow to the Russian racewalking school, which is widely considered as the best in the world. Many prominent racewalkers from different countries originate from Russia, as well as many young athletes with world class potential.

Sergey Kirdyapkin became an Olympic gold winner in 2012 in the 50 kilometers walk, and also won the World Race Walking Cup the same year. Olga Kaniskina won the gold medal in the 20 kilometers walk at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She also won three World Championships and one European Championship.

Sergey Borchin won three major gold medals during his career, including two victories at the World Championships, and one – at the Olympic Games 2008. Vladimir Kanaykin has become the silver medalist in the 2011 World Championship.

The disqualification period for the athletes will be reckoned from 2012, which means all the London Olympics champions are likely to keep their Olympic medals and titles.
