Archeologists have found remains of an ancient temple on the slope of Bytkh Mount in Sochi.
They assume it was constructed in the 8th – 9th centuries. The artifacts found in the ruins give evidence to it.
The ruins were found by the archeologist Andrey Kizilov from the Adygei Research Institute. He got interested in diggings carried out by builders laying a cable line along Kurortny Avenue. At the bottom of a deep ditch the scientist found artifacts, and then ruins of a building, dated to the Byzantine era.
The archeologist explains that these stone constructions can be easily mistaken for a retaining wall of the road and so the temple ruins could remain unnoticed in the center of Sochi for so long.
