Popular US-based TV channel CNN plans to resume its broadcasting in Russia as soon as possible, a representative from Turner Broadcasting System International (TBSI) company, told the press on Monday.
"We hope to find a way forward to resume distribution as soon as possible,” the representative said.
CNN stopped cable broadcasting in Russian television networks on January 1, 2015 due to the recent changes in Russian media legislation. The new law prohibited chargeable TV channels from showing commercials. TBSI found it inexpedient for an internationally known TV channel to cut out the advertisement from the air for one country only.
However, the recent amendments in the legislation have allowed chargeable TV channels to show advertisements again, with some slight quantitative restrictions. On January 27, representatives from CNN International and the Russian telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor had a special meeting on that question, where the both sides expressed an interest in resuming CNN broadcasting in Russia.
Founded in 1980, CNN opened its Russian division in 1983. Currently, CNN news reaches over 200 million households across 212 countries and territories.
