The anniversary fifth sled dog races “Amurskaya Metel” (“Amur Snowstorm”) were held in the vicinity of Khabarovsk, on the river arm on the territory of the “Zaimka” tourism complex. These races involved 63 sportspeople from Khabarovsk, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Vladivostok, Blagoveshchensk and Zavitinsk of Amur Oblast.
Numerous spectators saw wonderful dogs. The various breeds included Siberian Huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Eskimo dogs, Alsatian dogs, Chukotka sled dogs and standard Schnauzers. During two days the races on sleds with harnesses of six dogs have been carried out at a distance of ten kilometers, and with harnesses of four and two dogs - at a distance of five kilometers. Looped distances were prolonged by tricky routes, where female and male mushers fought on equal conditions with separate starts. Children younger than nine years also participated in the races with one-dog harnesses at a distance of 200 meters. The youngest musher has just turned four years.
