One more official holiday has appeared in the Republic of Kalmykia. The Day of Steppe will be celebrated on the third Sunday of April from 2015.

Back in 2013 the initiative of the “Steppe” Project of UNDP for the establishment of the “Day of Steppe” was presented at the National Conference on Nature Conservation. It was supported by the delegates of the conference, but no continuation followed. However, the Minister Ochirov N.L. supported this idea at a meeting of the Public Council under the Ministry of Environment of the Republic. Due to the efforts of the staff of the” Steppe” Project of the “Black Lands” Reserve, Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Kalmykia prepared materials explaining the need for the establishment of the holiday.

The fact is that today steppe ecosystems are most vulnerable, even in legal terms. The main threats are presented by plowing, overgrazing of livestock, fires. Therefore, according to experts, annual celebration of the “Day of Steppe” should form public opinion in favor of preservation of this unique landscape of the republic.
