Maya Plisetskaya, the unsurpassed prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre, aged 89, died of a heart attack in Germany on Saturday evening.

“Our goddess, the symbol of the entire ballet world is no more” — Diana Vishnyova said after the news about Maya Plisetskaya's death.

Maya Plisetskaya was a good friend of the Mariinsky Theater and a distinguished viewer of its premier performances, concerts, and festivals.

At the beginning of April the Mariinsky Theater welcomed Maya Plisetskaya and her husband Rodion Shchedrin at the festival Faces of Modern Pianism, and the theater was getting ready to congratulate the great ballerina on her 90th anniversary in November.
