GLONASS to Start Working at Full Power in 2015

Russia's GLONASS satellite navigation system is expected to start operating at peak capacity by the end of this year, the head of the Russian Space System, Andrey Tyulin, told the press on Thursday.

"We've already improved all possible technical defects and now we expect to see the first concrete results before the end of this year", Tyulin said commenting why it took so long for a GLONASS ground-based system control center to be created.

“Making the system operational is part of the customer’s job…  We will finish what we were assigned to as planned,” Tyulin added.

GLONASS or "GLObal NAvigation Satellite System," is a space-based satellite navigation system created as an answer to the US Global Positioning System (GPS). It is operated by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces and is expected to soon become another navigational system in operation with global coverage and of comparable precision.

By 2010, GLONASS achieved 100% coverage of Russia’s territory and in October 2011, full orbital coverage with 24 satellites was emplaced.
