Sotheby's Refuses to Remove Stolen Painting from Auction

The Sotheby's auction house has not complied with the Russian Interpol’s request to suspend the sale of Evening in Cairo by Ivan Aivazovsky.

“The painting by Ivan Aivazovsky will be put up for auction on June 2, 2015 according to the contract between the owner and the consigner”, - a representative of the Sotheby’s pointed out.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the painting was stolen from a private collection in 1997. It is noted that the Sotheby's has not provided details of negotiations with the painting’s owner and representatives of the Russian law enforcement agencies.

The general public could see the canvass for the last time at an exhibition in the Tretyakov Gallery in the 1950s. The estimate of the painting by Ivan Aivazovsky is about $2 million, which automatically makes it one of the most expensive auction lots upcoming on June 2.
