Outpost of Old Russia to be Reconstructed in Tambov

Historians and churchmen will start reconstruction of the Trinity Tsni Monastery, which once served as an outpost of Old Russia.

The culture monument is located at the Galdym recreation facility. The long-expected reconstruction will finally be started officially. On July 14 the place will be consecrated and marked with a wooden cross set up there, and in 12 months construction works will begin.

The monastery is older than Tambov city; its roots go back to the early 17th century. Historians claim that its founders were monks who constantly faced enemies’ attacks. The matter is that back then the Tambov land was an extreme southern point of Old Russia. Therefore the fortification was attacked by neighboring tribes, namely the Polovtsiajs, Pechenegs, etc. Besides, the monastery suffered the Cossacks’ attack under leadership of the rebel Stepan Razin in 1670. The church building very badly damaged by fire was later restored. Final destruction of the Trinity Tsni Monastery took place in the 18th century. The monastery collapsed for natural reasons.

Active excavation works are carried out near the monastery building. In the course of studying the cultural layer, archeologists unearthed lots of 400-year-olf artifacts, which will be displayed at a specially opened historical exhibition.
