Hit the Road in Kamchatka

Kamchatka tourist centres are bracing up for a new season. It kicks off in July drawing curious foreigners from Europe, Japan and USA.

The tide has turned to bring more Russian people to the pristine nature of the peninsula. The tip of the tour operators is to hurry up because the hotels of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of the region, are short in rooms as early as now. Flight tickers are will soon be in deficit, too.

Kamchatka has long been the attraction for outdoorsies, who come on fishing tours, trips to volcanoes, rafting and animal observation. Of course, the best season to come is summer but in the past years the winter trips to Kamchatka were in demand, too. Last winter, for example, the most popular pastime there was dog sled racing.

Earlier, people were put off by poor quality service and lack of accommodation. The situation has changed drastically now, with 2 more tourist camps constructed and increased attention to the sector.

On the offer are comfortable rooms, bathing in hot thermal springs, god sled racing, ski trips, snowboarding down volcano hills and snowmobiles.

It’s hard to define how many of tourists who came last winter, but according to reports the number has soared. The potential of the two biggest cities, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Yelizovo, is limited to 15,000 tourists a season. Smaller hotels are being built in the meantime. The airport in the city of Yelizovo is being renovated, with its international terminal extended.
